Embrace the New Normal
We all have our beauty routines and rituals. Maybe you keep it simple and natural, or maybe you go all-out with hair, makeup, skincare and fashion. Whichever you decide, you deserve to feel beautiful and confident every single day. We usually don’t, though. For many reasons, women don’t feel our bests when we walk out the door. In our new post-COVID normal, it’s even harder to feel great.
…Or is it easier? Releasing ourselves from the chains of societal beauty standards in quarantine, we might have learned to embrace the new normal by being less hard on ourselves about our appearance. The world is in crisis, and when huge, life-changing events are happening, it’s hard to be weighed down by superficial things. As women we can find a common ground in accepting ourselves for who we are, and say bye-bye to the old beauty stresses.
Beauty and Safety Combined
We’ve always incorporated practicality with fashion. Wearing glasses can be made into a beauty statement with stunning frames to suit your face and make you feel fantastic. When it’s cold, we keep warm with coats and scarves that not only serve the purpose of keeping us warm and toasty, but make us look great too!
The same can go for COVID-19 safety gear. Mask-wearing has become mandatory in most places, but many people find them uncomfortable and struggle to get used to the aesthetic and feeling. The best piece of advice I can give you is this: treat it like a winter coat or a pair of glasses. Just because it’s for safety doesn’t mean you can’t style it out and make it look awesome.
There are many brands and individual sole traders who sell funky masks which would suit anyone’s style. From chic, plain colored masks, to patterned ones, to slogan masks, no matter what your personal style is, you’ll find a cloth mask that matches it. Investing in multiple masks to keep you and others safe and also boost your confidence is a must.
Au Naturale, Baby
If you’ve enjoyed the liberation of quarantine but feel pressured into returning to old regimes now, you aren’t alone. Keep that liberating feeling by finding a happy medium. You don’t have to go back to your old ways, but staying away from beauty standards altogether may feel unnatural in practice. Finding your happy medium could take many, many forms. Here are a few tips for finding a balance:
- Natural beauty products like skincare and makeup. These help you feel stunning, while also benefitting the environment, not to mention making your skin healthier. Products which don’t contain harmful or harsh chemicals help you feel more relaxed and nourished, enhancing your natural beauty.
- Sparking joy. Have you ever heard this Marie Kondo phrase from the Netflix series Tidying Up? It asks you to de-clutter your home and belongings by asking yourself “Does this spark joy?”. If it doesn’t, throw it out! It’s a more minimal style of living which reduces stress an increases feelings of tranquility and balance.
- Purge your social media. When it comes to social media, we end up following influncers and celebrities we find interesting.. but at what cost? There’s nothing wrong with influencers, but if we’re trying to live up to their standard it can cause unnecessary stress and feelings of insecurity. Your beauty confidence should not be determined by people on Instagram, but by you and you alone.
