Moving Checklist: A List of Annoying Jobs You Need to Do Before you Move House

If you are moving house then you will know what a wonderful experience this can be. You’ll be getting ready to move in with your family and your kids will probably be super excited about getting their new room set up as well. The problem here is that there are a lot of jobs that people often overlook when they move house and this can cause you to be delayed in your move. This is the last thing that you need, but the whole thing is completely avoidable if you follow these useful tips below.

Moving Checklist: A List of Annoying Jobs You Need to Do Before you Move House

Redirected Mail

The first thing that you have to do is get all of your mail redirected. You can do this through your local postal service and it is a great way for you to try to prevent things such as identity theft. Of course,  it’s important to know that you can do this in advance of the day that you move as well. Some people choose to do it 12 months in advance and this will help you to prepare for the big day. With everything, there is a small charge if you want to change your documents over but it helps to make sure that your documents won’t ever fall into the wrong hands. On top of this, the last thing that you need is all of your mail being sent to your old address for the next couple of months without you even realizing.

Telling the Bank

It’s also super important that you tell your insurance company or any companies that you have a debt with about your move. This will help them to update their records and it also means that they can get hold of you if you are ever having an emergency. If you need to stop any important financial documents from falling into the wrong hands such as a new credit card then this is what you need to do. It’s a good idea for you to write to them in advance so that they can get their records up to date and you also need to sort out your new home insurance policy as well. It’s always an idea for you to check the cost of insuring your new home before you move in, as this will give you the time you need to work out if you can get a cheaper policy. After all, every home is different and you may actually be able to save some money here.

Your Car

You’ll have to update the address on your driving license and even on your car ownership certificate as well. This is something that a lot of people forget about and it can also make it super difficult for you to avoid penalties in the future if you don’t get this sorted out. You can easily apply for an updated driving license by contacting the site where you purchased your license from. It doesn’t actually cost you anything to change the name on your driving license but you could be fined if you don’t go ahead and update your details. If you don’t tell the company who provided you with your license that you have moved then you could face a huge fine, even if you are only late by a couple of days. On top of this, it can take up to a month for your new registration documents to be handed out to you so if you need to tax your car during this time then that’s something that you need to take into consideration. Now is also a great time for you to think about your car insurance as well. If you are able to change to get a cheaper policy for your new home then why not try and get one for your car as well? If you don’t tell your insurer that you are moving then they could refuse to pay out your car accident claim if something were to happen as well so it’s worth getting both of these things done at the same time.

Meter Readings

If your current home is on a meter, then take this reading and contact your suppliers before you

move. This will help you to ensure that you don’t get billed for someone else using the meter. Your utility company will probably have an option for you to change your address online and this is a great way for you to really get everything sorted out. If you are not tied into a fixed deal, then finding a new supplier is a great way for you to save money.

TV Service

If you have A TV service and your kids depend on it then the last thing that you need is to not have anything for them to watch when they move into their new home. You need to work with your TV company about your change of address and it also helps to let them know the date you are moving as well. When you are able to do this, you can then easily get everything changed over that day and it will save a lot of headaches later on. If you let them know in advance then you will be covered from the day you move in and this is a great way for you to really get the support you need. If you have digital TV or broadband then you may be able to move this as well without any extra cost. The best thing here is that you will easily be able to take your package with you if they also offer the service to the area you are moving to.

The Little Things

Think about it, what little things do you have coming to your house at the moment? Do you get milk deliveries? Magazines? Newspapers? Snack boxes? Even things like DVD rentals may be coming to your house right now and if you don’t get this sorted out then you’ll be paying for someone else to get access to all of this for free and that is the last thing that you need. Sit down with your partner or someone you know and make a list of everything that you need to move. This will help you to stay on top of everything and you can even get a checklist going on as well so you won’t have any problems there. When you have sorted out something, check it off, as it’ll really help you to get the peace of mind you need with the move.

If you want to make the whole move easier on you and the kids then why not hire a babysitter? It can be hard work trying to keep the kids entertained while you are trying to sort out which box is supposed to go in which room. It may be a good idea for you to have them stay with a friend or a family member as well, and you won’t have to pay anything for this either.

Freezer Food

It’s a good idea for you to not waste money wherever possible when you are trying to move house and this is especially the case when you don’t have much money to begin with. If you want to make sure that you don’t take a financial hit when you move then try to use up all the food in the freezer. You also need to make sure that you cook some meals in advance as well. When you are able to do this you can really prepare for the week ahead and you will also have plenty of food options set up so that you don’t have to go out for takeaways every single day. If you have anything in the fridge or freezer that you are not able to store then consider having a friend or even a neighbour put them in their fridge or freezer for you so that you don’t have to throw it away. Most people would be more than happy to do this for you, and it can save you a lot of stress on the big day.

When you have a lot of appliances, it can be hard for you to get them all moved on the same day at the same time. For this reason, you need to find out which of your appliances are in full working order. You then need to figure out if the ones that aren’t entirely functional are worth taking with you. It’s very easy for you to get your broken appliances fixed, and you can easily visit website providers to get your repair arranged.  You can do this before the move and it may stop you from having to buy a completely new one when you arrive as well.

Moving house can be stressful but things only get even more stressful when you are not able to plan properly. When you have the plan that you need sorted out and when you are able to work out what needs to be done and what doesn’t, you can then easily take control of the whole situation.
