Skincare Basics for You and Baby

Babies’ skin is vulnerable, just like yours was when you were born. Babies need extra special skincare, especially during those first few months.

While babies need a good skincare routine, so do you. When you’re caring for a little one, t can be easy to forget to look after yourself – but it’s important that you make some time for a bit of pampering. Focusing on your skin will keep your it smooth and glowing, helping to boost your confidence – something that’s important when you’re a new mom.

When you’re caring for a little one, t can be easy to forget to look after yourself – but it’s important that you make some time for a bit of pampering. Focusing on your skin will keep your it smooth and glowing, helping to boost your confidence – something that’s important when you’re a new mom.

For baby: Keep an eye out for problem skin

Babies are prone to all sorts of irritations during those early months, so it’s important to keep an eye out for them. If they’re grizzly, but are fed, not tired and don’t appear sick – then check their skin to see if something could be irritating them.

include eczema, prickly heat and dermatitis. Make sure you treat the areas to help them heal and leave your baby happy and healthy.

For you: Use hand cream

When you’re dealing with a baby, it’s likely you’re going to be washing your hands a lot. Between the feeds and changing and wanting to remain germ-free, all that harsh washing can start to take its toll. Using a mild, gentle hand cream will keep your hands feeling soft while protecting them against all the potential damage that comes with excessive hand washing. Choose hand creams designed for sensitive skin and look for ones that are fragrance-free, these will help keep baby’s skin free from irritation too.

For baby: Use a comb at the beginning

Baby’s sensitive skin needs time to adjust to being in the outside world. The white coating, known as vernix, needs to be left to absorb naturally into the baby’s s
kin. If, however, you want to remove dry skin flakes that might be in the hair, you can use a gentle comb to do so. After a few weeks, you can start to use baby shampoo as part of their bath routine.

For you: Treat yourself to a hair mask

New moms can find it difficult to find the time to style their hair, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep it in a good condition. Applying a hair mask will keep your hair sleek, shiny and healthy – reducing your styling time to make your hair easier to manage. If funds are a bit short at the moment, you can always make a hair mask out of the things you have around your home. Coconut oil hair masks are very popular, but just make sure that you rinse thoroughly.

For baby: Avoid diaper rash

Diaper rash can be miserable for your baby, and miserable for you too as you try to deal with it. Some of the ways you can stop diaper rash from happening include not leaving wet diapers on too long and make sure baby has plenty of room in their diaper. If you notice a diaper rash occurring frequently, without an obvious cause – you might want to try a different diaper brand to see if things improve.

For you: Take a long bath now and then

Finding the time to relax is difficult when you’re at the beck and call of a newborn, but you a bit of relaxation time will do you some good. A long hot bath can soothe your aching muscles, give you the chance to have a bit of time to yourself and help you feel less stressed. All of these things not only benefit you but baby too. Let someone else take charge for an hour while you get into the tub and soak.

For baby: Leave baby acne alone

Baby acne is very common, and unlike other types of acne, the likely cause is yeast and not oil or hormones like teenage or adult acne. The best advice for baby acne is to leave it alone, as it will clear up by itself.

For you: Cleanse your skin twice a day

Even if you’re not wearing much makeup at the moment, it’s still important to wash your face twice a day to prevent breakouts and keep your skin looking healthy. A gentle cleanser or a foam based formula is great for cleansing your face in a hurry, or you can use a 2 in 1 cleanser/toner product to speed up your cleansing routine.
For baby: Introduce products slowly
You’ve probably got a whole room full of baby products that were given to you at your baby shower or as a leaving gift from work, but you won’t be able to use these for a little while. Babies’ skin takes time to develop its own protection, so it’s recommended that you just use water for those first few weeks. Then you can start to use fragrance-free, baby-friendly products to keep baby clean and to ensure a gentle routine for their skin.

For you: Use some baby products yourself

With all of those baby products lying around, there’s no reason why you can’t use some of them yourself! Did you know that baby oil makes a fantastic eye makeup remover? A quick swipe on a cotton pad can erase traces of even the most stubborn mascara or eyeliner. Baby shampoo is gentle enough to use every day if your hair type becomes greasy quickly, while it also doubles up as a fantastic makeup brush cleanser. Baby lotion is very gentle, so if you want to use a moisturizer that smells great, then look no further than your baby bag. Lastly, if you have some powder as part of your diaper changing routine – you could use this instead of dry shampoo to keep your hair looking fresh.

For baby: Get bath time right

Babies need regular bathing to help them stay clean, but you want to avoid bathing them too often to help their skin develop its natural defenses. Newborns should be bathed around 2-3 times a week, and this is something that you can continue to do up to a year old. Bathing too often can dry out skin, leaving it vulnerable to cracks and irritation.

For you: Drink your recommended intake of water

Water is important for keeping your skin supple, healthy and hydrated. When you’re dehydrated, your lips will crack and peel and, your skin will also start to dry out. A regular adult needs to drink around eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy, but you can increase that if you’re breastfeeding. Water is important to help the quality of your milk, and drinking more water will mean that you give your baby, healthy, natural sustenance, stopping you from reaching for the soda cans or the juice.

For baby: Soothe dry skin with the right products

Babies can suffer easily from dry skin, which makes them more susceptible to rashes and other skin conditions. However, with the right products – you can give your baby some help to make them more comfortable and to soothe that irritation. With baby eczema prone skin, you can try different creams and lotions that will calm the area to keep your baby happy. Remember to get persistent problems checked out with a doctor to rule out any allergies your baby might have.

For you: Keep your body moisturized

Nothing beats the feeling of silky soft skin, but who really has the time to moisturize after every shower or bath? As a mum, your time is even more limited. Luckily, you can try a range of solutions to help you keep your body moisturised. Spray on moisturizers can save you a lot of time, and are ideal for applying in the mornings, while in-shower moisturizers are also becoming popular for women on the move. Try to moisturize before you go to sleep; this will keep your skin hydrated overnight.

For both of you: Use sun protection when needed

Effective suncare is important for both you and your baby to make sure that neither of you burn and cause sun damage to your skin. Babies should be kept out of direct sunlight anyway, but there are sun protection products for babies that you should consider to give your baby effective protection from the sun. Meanwhile, make sure that you’re covered up and that you choose skincare products which are high in SPF.

With the right skincare, both you and baby can look forward to a great first few months. Looking after your skin is important when it comes to beauty and wellness, and you’ll feel much happier with a skin routine you can manage around your baby. All babies are different, which can make it hard to judge their needs, but as a parent – you’ll find that different things work for different babies so don’t think that because one solution hasn’t worked for you, that you’re a bad parent. The lessons will come in time, and looking after yours, and your baby’s health should be your main concern.
